STEPHENS 63, GURDON 53

Published Wednesday, February 24, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Lady Go-Devils only got to play one game at Stephens in the 7AA District Tournament. It was ruined by sharp shooter Desheka Porchia, who finished with 42 points for the Lady Roadrunners.

Gurdon's senior girls received a bye after winning the conference championship and didn't have to play until Thursday night. They tied in the conference race with the Nevada senior girls and each were honored with large trophies.

However, the bye proved to be disastrous, as Stephens played Monday night and were well prepared for the Lady Devils, not to mention the home court and home crowd advantage, which came in handy the last quarter.

Coming from behind the second half, Stephens took a 63-53 victory over the Lady Devils.

It was a tie ball game after one quarter will 11 points for each team, but Gurdon held a 25-22 lead at halftime. The Lady Roadrunners had tied it at 43 after another quarter.

Leading Gurdon in scoring was Vanesha Young with 17 points.

Lavonda Young also scored in double figures for the Lady Devils, getting 14 points against Stephens.

Others scoring for Gurdon were Ebonee Crow with 8 points, Tiffany Ware 6, Brandi Escanlante 4, Angela Walker with 3 points and Emeral Hendrix finished with 1 point for the Lady Devils.
