Third Time Charm For Stephens In 7AA Central District Tourney

Published Wednesday, February 24, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Stephens Roadrunners - senior girls and boys-walked away with the tournament trophies Saturday night on their home court, but both teams knew they almost got beat.

In the first game the Lady Roadrunners defeated the Nevada Lady Jays and the in the second game the Gurdon Go-Devils came in second place behind the undefeated Stephens team. Stephens is ranked seventh in the state overall and first in Class AA.

Gurdon probably could have pulled an upset if they had controlled the first quarter. But that period belonged to Stephens as they scored 26 points while holding the Go-Devils to 8.

After that Gurdon took control and edged toward the win, but fell short by six points as the Roadrunners captured the title by 62 to 56 before a packed house.

Had it not been for the large first quarter deficit, Gurdon might have won the game.

The Go-Devils had narrowed it to 38-24 by halftime and to 48-39 going into the final period, but time ran out.

Gurdon had four players in double figures.

Rashun Hopson scored 18 points, Adrian Meeks finished with 11 and Demond Beasley and Terry Cornish each scored 10 points in the game that saw technical fouls on each side, first on Stephens then on Gurdon. It was a hot contest and each was playing for the big trophy.

Brandon and Antario Glover each scored 22 points for Stephens to lead all players in scoring. Reggie Todd followed with 16 points.
