Published Wednesday, February 24, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneFORDYCE 48 The Wolverettes made it to the finals by trouncing Fordyce 71-48 Thursday night. The Lady Red Bugs played close for eight minutes, but were blitzed out of existence for the rest of the game. At the end of one Prescott led 18-12 and turned on the jets. They extended their lead to double-figures by halftime with a 39-28 score. The blitzkrieg continued in the third quarter as the Wolverettes added 30 to their tally, while only surrendering eight to go up 69-36. From there, the bench finished up the contest for Prescott. The Wolverettes were nearly perfect from the charity stripe as they converted 15 of 16, while the Lady Bugs were seven of 15. Cossey led the mauling with 20 points, including four treys. Graham was one back with 19, while Stockton played string music to the tune of 16 points. Hodges scored eight, with Haynie adding six. Fordyce opened the tourney with a win over Fouke, while Nashville dropped Bismarck in their opening contest. Round two in the tourney saw the Lady Bugs drop Fountain Lake, while Mena edged Nashville. The semi-final contests saw the Wolverettes beat Fordyce, while the Lady 'Cats of Mena stunned De Queen. The Lady Leopards, though, rebounded and took third place in the consolation game. The Wolverettes will open play in the regional tournament at Hamburg today (Wednesday) at 7 p.m., following the Curley Wolves opener at 5:30. Prescott will be taking on the fourth place team from the 8AAA, Warren's Lady Lumberjacks. One win and the Wolverettes are guaranteed a slot in the state tournament next week at Fountain Lake. Other regional action sees the tourney opening with powerhouse Drew Central hosting Fordyce in senior girls' play.
