Nevada talks budgetBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, October 15, 2008 in the Nevada County Picayune A plan for recruiting minority teachers, the budget and upcoming repairs to the districts building were among the items discussed by the Nevada School Board during their September meeting. According to Nevada Superintendent Rick McAfee, the district is facing many of the same concerns other districts around the state are facing with the price of fuel and repairs at the top of that list. McAfee said the price of diesel and utilities makes the schools budget much tougher. He said the district expects to spend something more than $75,000 for diesel over the course of the school year. Aside from the normal operating, costs, McAfee said the main issue with the districts budget is a simple matter of age. Were 20 years old, he said. That means that some equipment, as well as the districts buildings, are in need of repair or replacement. For example, the districts commercial washer was recently replaced. The washer, used for washing athletic uniforms, mops and towels, was a $5,000 expense. McAfee said its only a matter of time until the district has to have a new roof which will be a huge expense, more so because the district will have to meet new school standards. For the moment, he said the students are dry and safe, meaning any major work to the building will be put off for the moment. In other business, the board passed a plan required for every school with a student body of at least 10 percent minority students. McAfee said the district has outlined how they will continue to attempt to hire and retain quality minority teachers, including putting out notices to colleges with minority populations. The next school board meeting is Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at the school. Meetings are open to the public. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
