Go-Devils fall in Mineral Springs Hornets' nestEvangeline WilliamsPublished Wednesday, September 17, 2008 in the Gurdon Times The Gurdon Go-Devils felt the sting of the Mineral Springs Hornets Friday night. Gurdon lost to the Hornets 35-8. In the first quarter, Mineral Springs' Shaun Richardson made a 5-yard touchdown run. At one point, Gurdon was in a compromising position to throw the ball on t he 30 yard line, but Keonta McClelland made a dash, picking up yardage. Go-Devils quarterback Ethan Jones was very accurate with the football on short passes although the team just couldn't get through the Hornet defense. In the first half of the game, Gurdon accumulated 33 yards passing with no penalties. During the half-time show the Gurdon High School band "got jiggy with it" and the Gurdon Cheerleaders were trying to get the fans motivated into cheering for the team before they returned to the football field. The second half began with the sportsmanship rule being allowed. Gurdon's Jones handed off the ball to McClelland who made it to the 23 yard line, the on the same drive he handed it off to O'Bryan Bell, who picked up a Go-Devil first down. The Devils had a good run but the Hornets got in the way. Mineral Springs had problems as Gurdon had the previous week. Penalties were called for early movement. With 33 seconds remaining in the third quarter, O'Bryan Bell scored the Devils' first touchdown. The two-point conversion was good. The Go-Devils were "pitching" the Hornets and kept them from scoring in the fourth quarter. Head Coach John Pace said his team improved with this game, and at half-time they made some adjustments. "They are working very hard, and they will get better each week," Pace said. The key offensive player was Bell, and defensive player of the game was Adam Clark. This Friday the Devils travel to Jessieville to tame the Lions. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
