'Ike' rans on fairBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, September 17, 2008 in the Nevada County Picayune Even with some sprinkles and the threat of rain, the Nevada County Fair Parade drew a crowd. But the rain was enough to cancel the Saturday night rodeo and to have a negative impact on fair week overall. Tammy Milam, president of the Nevada County Fair Association, said the fair had shaped up to be successful and that those who attended seemed to have a good time. She said gate receipts for Tuesday was up some from the previous year. The weathers impact hit hardest Saturday afternoon and evening when the rodeo was called off and booths forced to shut down because of the rain. Despite the rain, support for those trying out for Miss Nevada County categories was strong both Saturday and Thursday. Another popular event, the premium sale, drew many of the regulars along with some new faces, Milam said. Gross proceeds from the sale were more than $20,000, according to Milam, who added that the numbers were preliminary and final figures would be available soon. There was no carnival at this years fair and Milam said the booths and events that were open were successful with all making at least some money. Milam said the fair association will begin immediately on plans for next years fair. She said anyone who has ideas or comments is welcome to attend the next fair board meeting, set for Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Potlatch Building on the Nevada County Fairgrounds.
