County landfill implements tipping fees

With two members of the Nevada County Quorum Court absent,

justices of the peace voted to implement a fee for dumping at the

Nevada County Landfill, effective immediately.

Nevada County Judge Baker Butler said a contractor who

dumped several large loads of waste at the landfill prompted his

decision to ask JPs to implement a fee. Butler said that the arrival

of those large loads meant that county equipment was running nonstop

to handle the materials.

Youve got to dig and youve got to cover it up, Butler said.

The fuel is killing us.

The county operates a Class 4 landfill. This type of landfill

accepts only wood, shingles, building materials, limbs, appliances

and other similar items. Butler said the landfill has been in operation

more than a decade.

Household trash, however, is compacted at the location and transferred to a landfill at

Nashville.

Butler said the county pays

a fee for disposing of trash at

Nashville. The fee, commonly

referred to as a tipping fee,

is $22 per ton, Butler said.

Butler said the county has

not charged for dumping in the

past, no matter how many

loads an individual has to

dump.

JP Curtis Lee Johnson said

that could account for some of

the excessive dumping theyve

seen.

Theres no telling how

much were getting from out

of the county, he said.

Butler said he had hoped

the JPs would not take action

on the issue for another month

to allow time for a comprehensive

policy. As it stands now,

he said any contractor with

multiple loads will be charged

at the new rate of $22 per ton.

Individuals who need to dispose

of anything that can

legally be dumped in the landfill

will not be charged, Butler

said.
