Regulations For Dogs Change

Published Wednesday, March 3, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

A decades-old Arkansas hunting tradition was ended by the state Game and Fish Commission at its February meeting on the 15th.

Licenses for hunting dogs were eliminated effective March 1. Left unchanged, though, was a requirement that hunting dogs wear collars with their owner's name and address.

Arkansas is believed to be the only state that licensed hunting dogs. The $2.50 annual license for dogs brought the agency about $224,000 annually, fiscal chief Ray Sebren told the commissioners. The number of dog licenses in Arkansas has gradually declined in recent years.

Commissioner Bill Bridgforth of Pine Bluff, who made the motion to eliminate the dog licenses, said, "We talked about eliminating dog licenses during our campaign for the conservation sales tax (in 1996). It's time to do it. This way, we are giving something back to the sportsmen of Arkansas. It's a show of faith on our part."
