Depot gets new director - times 3By Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, July 16, 2008 in the Nevada County Picayune Its never difficult to see things that need doing if one only takes the time to look around. The problem is finding the time, dedication and energy to actually do them. Three Nevada County Residents saw that the Nevada County Depot Museum has great potential but was being underutilized. In this case, the three decided to do something about it. Louis Phillips, Gail Young and Jayne Randolph asked to take on the role of co-directors and the plan has been approved by the oversight board. Phillips, Young and Randolph are preparing to push the depot to the forefront of community activities, but say theres much work to be done first. Inventory, Young said. Were looking at whats here. Young said they have discovered an array of photos and a r t i f a c t s that will eventually be on display. In addition, they hope to set up d i s p l a y s and shows that will c h a n g e periodically, encouraging local visitors to return again and again. Randolph said the idea for the project came during a recent birthday celebration. We realized we had to do something, she said. We had a great party, Young said. We think we need to have more parties. Those parties, according to Randolph, will begin with special exhibits. One of the local exhibitors who has already agreed to participate is Spot Daniels, noted folk artist. The three say theyll be searching for others with something to share. One of the plans is to create a kid-friendly corner. As Young put it, a place where kids will be encouraged to touch rather than being told not to. Phillips said the most important thing from the community at this point is support. She encouraged anyone with a comment, question or suggestion to call the museum at 887-5821 and to leave a message if theres no one to answer, or to write to P.O. Box 592 in Prescott. All three say there is lots of history around the county, not just related to trains but related to Prescotts past and present, its people and events that make it home to many. None of the three were born in Nevada County but all came to know and love the area in the 1970s. Phillips said having the depot as a fundamental part of the community is a tribute to John Teeter, local historian. We want to honor that work, Young said.
