Charlotte NelsonPublished Wednesday, June 18, 2008 in the Gurdon TimesCharlotte Nelson, 94, of Benton, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock. Mrs. Nelson was born in Ashdown on July 22, 1913, to the late John Leland and Mynerva Jane Doughton Machen. At age 39 she met Clarence, the love of her life, and was happiest taking care of her family, friends and animals. She rebuilt tanks for our country during World War II. She loved making quilts for her many friends and family. But her biggest gift was her beautiful smile that left warm hearts everywhere she went. She was a member of Holland Chapel Baptist Church and had worked in retail sales. In addition to her parents, her husband of 39 years, Clarence A. Nelson; three sisters, Louise Mullens, Francis Horn, and Jane Jester; and one brother, James (Bill) Machen, also preceded her in death. Survivors include her daughter, Beckey Witkowski and husband Steve of North Little Rock; one brother, William Sport Machen and wife Fern of Albuquerque, N.M.; granddaughter, Stephanie Scott and husband Rennie; great-granddaughter, Mylee Scott; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 13, in the chapel of Roller-Ballard Funeral Home in Benton, with Bro. Kim Hammer and Bro. David Ward officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander. Pallbearers were Mike Jester, Jay Jones, Rennie Scott, Jim Britton, David McKelvey and Eric Chesher.
