Vandals hit city's parkBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, June 4, 2008 in the Nevada County Picayune Damage to the Prescott City Park at the hand of vandals is estimated at several hundred dollars. According to Prescott Parks Director Steve Crow, equally disturbing is the time city workers spent cleaning up the mess left behind. Crow said those responsible turned over several large trash barrels that were full of trash from visitors the previous weekend. The damage occurred immediately following the Memorial Day weekend. They slung trash everywhere, Crow said. At some point, the vandals moved into one of the restrooms where they tore a commode from the wall. A net on a tennis court was also damaged. Crow said that the cleanup took time that would otherwise have been spent on parks projects for the citizens of the area. He said that the city doesnt have an extensive parks system and there isnt enough money available to create or maintain a larger system. What weve got is what weve got, he said. He said that its disturbing that a few people would take it upon themselves to destroy property that is used often by the public. It was just somebody who wanted to be destructive, he said. Someone convicted for the damage could be charged with criminal mischief and made to pay the cost of repairs. According to Prescott Police Chief Brian Russell, there are no suspects yet in custody. Anyone with information should call the city police at 887-6779. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
