JP seat still up for grabsBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, May 21, 2008 in the Nevada County Picayune In the Nevada County Justice of the Peace District 8 race, incumbent Arval Mason will be facing challenger Harold Vines in the runoff election on June 10. The vote between the two was split by a third candidate, Scott Harding, who received 76 votes, representing 26 perscent of those voting. Mason got 96 votes and Vines got 120. Mason currently holds the seat and serves on the countys budget committee. Mason was defeated in his 2006 bid for that position by Sonny Buster, though Buster died before taking office and Mason agreed to serve the term. Mason has served the district for about a decade. Vines is a former Nevada County Sheriff and sought that position in 2006. He said he has 30 years in law enforcement from several area departments. Both candidates have cited finances as the biggest issue facing their district and the county as a whole. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
