The Nevada County Sheriffs race ended with two

returning to the campaign trail seeking voter support.

Nevada County Sheriff Bobby Carlton faced challengers Danny Martin and Judy Ferguson in the primary and Carlton and Martin will meet again at the polls on June 10.

Ferguson got just more than 8 percent of the vote,

showing some strength at several polling places but not

taking the majority at any.

The votes cast for Ferguson were sufficient to deny either Carlton or Martin enough votes for a majority.

Following the election, Ferguson said she wasnt

willing to throw her support behind either of the candidates.

I know both these guys, Ferguson said.

Carlton and Martin split the remaining votes fairly

evenly though Martin came out ahead. The final tally

showed Martin with 994 votes to 881 for Carlton. Both say theyre back to their campaigning though they are now focusing more on the areas where they were weak in the polls.

Carlton carried 11 of the 29 polling places and the candidates tied in Alabama and no votes were cast in Reader. Carlton was strongest in Rosston, Union,

Waterloo and Sutton. Martin took the clear majority in all four city wards but was strongest in Ward 2 and Ward 3. He also carried clear majorities in Cale,

Jackson and Willisville. Bodcaw was split between the two candidates with Bodcaw City turning out for Carlton and Bodcaw Rural voters preferring Martin.

That scenario was repeated in Bluff City.

The June 10 runoff will be cast only on paper ballots

according to Nevada County Clerk Julie Oliver. Oliver cited the cost of programming the voting machines for a runoff as the reason for that decision. All polling places will be open.
