Parents and members of the Gurdon High School Band brought out their oven mits, baking sheets and cookie dough in exchange for some green-backed dough at a fund raising bake sale Thursday, April 24.

Band director Alan Wimberly auctioned off more than 20 cakes, pies, cookies and other desserts to help raise money for junior and senior high band members to attend summer band camp at Henderson State University during the months of June and July. The cost of band camp, said Wimberly, is between $250 and $275 per student, a price some members cannot afford.

The band, which currently has 87 members in grades 8-12, only has about $800 left in its annual budget. In total, the bake sale raised more than $1,200.

Political candidates of the area attended the bake sale to support the band. Among the candidates and officeholders in attendance were State Representative Johnnie Roebuck, Circuit Clerk Penny Ross, Circuit Clerk elect Martha Smith, Clark County Judge Ron Daniell, Sheriff David Turner, Justice of the Peace Vickie Smithpeters, Circuit Judge elect Robert McCallum and County Treasurer Judy Beth Hutcherson.
