GPS receives $43,000 for summer schoolJoe PhelpsPublished Wednesday, April 23, 2008 in the Gurdon Times Although summer school is normally associated as a way for failing students to pass on to the next grade; but this summer there will be a different association with summer school for some students. Gurdon Primary School received a $37,000 Reading First grant and a $6,000 grant from 21st Century for an Academic Excellence Summer Camp for the month of July. The program is to be geared for students who want to excel in small-group literacy or mathematics instruction. Six GPS teachers and two GPS paraprofessionals will instruct the program for pre-kindergarten students and students entering the fourth grade. Transportation provided by school district to and from school will provided as such during the normal school year. The program, which will last from July 1-29, will consist of 3 1/2 hours per day of instruction, from 8-11:30 a.m., followed by lunch and dismissal at noon. We want the community to see this as something positive to benefit their children, said Rita Roe, GPS principal. We do not want them to associate summer school with failure, because we know through the support of the community and parents, our school will continue to go forward.
