The annual Nevada County Health Fair is set for Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. until noon.

According to coordinator Pat Blake, there are an array of screenings, community service applications and fun things to do.

The health fair is an annual event that was begun by the Prescott-Nevada County Health Alliance but has become a truly community-run event. As of press time, some 45 booth spaces have been reserved. For the youngsters, health, vision, hearing and developmental screenings will be offered. Other screenings available will be glucose, oxygen, body mass index and cholesterol. Blake said that those who want to participate in those screenings should fast for several hours prior to the screening time in order to gain more accurate readings, though anyone with health issues should contact their physician prior to fasting.

The prostate screening will again be offered. Blake said the blood tests will be administered with examinations performed by local physician Dr. Michael Young. The Nevada County Cancer Association and Medical Park Hospital have teamed up with Young to offer the complete tests free of charge. Those who participate will be notified of results by mail. There is no charge for these screenings and no insurance paperwork required.

Blake said the health department, housing authority, HIPPY program, Day Services and Career Pathways will have information and applications for community services available in Nevada County. The Prescott School District will have resource and parental involvement information as well.

Other booths include:

Project Graduation offering tickets for the riding lawn mower. This program offers Prescott High School graduates a safe place for graduation night.

Financial information will be available from the Bank of Prescott.

Applications will be available for scholarships from the Nevada County Single Parent fund.

Free hot dogs, bottled water and many handouts will be offered.

And after the screenings and important information, theres always time for Fiesta Bingo by Prescott Manor Nursing Center or a few minutes for face painting.

Blake said theres no doubt the screenings, health information and community services are the most important part of the fair.

But its also a time when people of the community can just come together, she said. Its a time when you can see your neighbors.

Its not too late to reserve a booth. Spaces are free but are limited. To make a reservation, contact Blake at 887-6686.
