K-6 Science Fair pushes students to thinkJoe PhelpsPublished Wednesday, April 2, 2008 in the Gurdon Times Scientists in training bustled about in Gurdon Primary School Gymnasium Thursday, March 27, for the K-6 Science Fair. The fair, in its sixth year, showcased 45 student experiments. GPS fourth grade science teacher Mrs. Runyan said there were only six participants in its first year. The experiments ranged from testing the life of batteries, extracting iron from different brands of dry cereal, determining whether or not fingerprints are hereditary and growing crystal gardens. Second graders Dillon Reese and Campbell Efrid tied for first place, making history in the fairs six years. The thirteen winners will go on to compete at Henderson State University in the Dawson District Science Fair. The fair, scheduled for May 16, will also include larger school districts like Benton, Bryant and Hot Springs. Were the smallest school, and usually come back with lots of awards, Runyan said.
