Gibson is 'Citizen', Randolph is 'Treasure'By Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, March 26, 2008 in the Nevada County Picayune The Nevada County Citizen of the year for 2008 is, according to the bio presented at the annual Nevada County Chamber banquet, a role model for children and adults alike and a vital member of the community. As the community involvements of Prescott-Nevada County Librarian Joyce Gibson were described, it could have been a number of people - until it came to the library. When you enter the beautifully decorated library, you get the wow factor, said Nevada County Chamber President Carrie Niven. And you are greeted by this attractive woman with a wonderful smile. Niven went on to say that this woman would excitedly offer to show any visitor around the library. Gibson took the stage and admitted that shed wondered at the visit from her grandson who was present for the event. Gibson said shed eventually accepted the story that it is spring break and that he was here to fish with his grandfather. Gibson then quoted the words to a song that reveal the wisdom of the saying that no man is an island. I accept this on behalf of the citizens of Nevada County, she said. Because no man is an island. Prior to Gibsons taking the stage, banquet attendees were treated to the Prescott Beach Boys - the famed foursome of Cass Martin, Chuck Sullivan, Brad Crain and Lynn Vanderveer who performed those spring break favorites such as Surfing USA, and (I wish they all could be) Nevada County Girls, before slowing it down with Surfer Girl. Crain was also on stage to accept the Best Dressed man. In keeping with the theme of spring break, Crain wore a print shirt, khaki shorts and sandals and the judges admitted that the legs made the final impression. He was joined on stage by Sydney Ross, dressed to the max in a hula shirt though jeans could be seen underneath. Crain was also honored as past president of the chamber and said that the job had been easy with the support of the board and chamber director Mary Godwin. The other major award of the night went to Jayne Randolph who was named the 2008 Lenore Dalrymple Treasure of Gold. Randolphs community involvements include a period of time as a teacher and a current membership in the Prescott-Nevada County Friends of the Library. You all are the real treasures, Randolph said to the audience as she took the stage and accepted the award. Randolph talked of her time as a teacher in the Prescott School District, her colleagues and the fact that it all came together to allow her to be part of the community. She then talked of her initiation into the Prescott School District. I was going to the second grade and I got lost, she said. And I cried. Randolph said she was given directions, told to go on to class and that everything would work out fine. She said the administrator then said, But what did you do in Dallas? referring to her apparent lack of a sense of direction in the relatively small town of Prescott. Randolph said she loved her time teaching. But then something wonderful happened, she said, referring to her involvement with the library.
