Several city and county racesBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, March 19, 2008 in the Nevada County Picayune Multiple candidates have filed for three of the eight Prescott City Council seats as well as several Nevada County offices, including sheriff, justice of the peace and constable. The sheriffs race began early with three candidates filing their intention to seek office. Incumbent Bobby Carlton will face Prescott Police Department officer Danny Martin and former sheriffs office employee Judy Ferguson. Carlton has been in the office two years, having beat out incumbent Steve Otwell in 2006. Two JPs face opposition. Donny McGuire, incumbent in JP district 3, has filed his intention to seek another term while Danny Miller has also filed for that position. Three are seeking the JP district 8 seat currently held by Arvan Mason. Mason was beat out in the 2006 election by Sonny Buster but Buster died before taking office and Mason was asked by members of the quorum court to serve the term. Mason now faces Harold Vines and Scott Harding for the seat. On the city level, Robert Loe, incumbent for Ward 1, position 1, will face challenger Adam Guthrie Jr. Prescott is divided into four wards, each with two seats one elected by voters of that ward and one elected by a city-wide poll. Larry Baker, who holds position 2 of Ward 1, does not have an opponent. In Ward 2, incumbent Howard G. Austin is unchallenged but there are three who filed for position 2 of Ward 2. They are incumbent Gary Lowdermilk, Ron Murphy and Elaine Williams. Williams served part of a term on the council as a representative of Ward 3, but resigned when she moved from that Ward. By law, representatives must be qualified to vote in the ward they represent in order to serve. The seat Williams vacated, Ward 3, position 1, was declared vacant and has not yet been filled though Jorge Nassar, former mayor and local businessman, has filed his intention to seek that seat. Nassar is unopposed. Jerry Wilson currently holds the Ward 3, position 2, seat and is facing teacher Dennis Pruitt and local pastor Arthur Menard. The Ward 4 positions held by Susie Meeks and James Roy Cornelius are uncontested. County positions for judge, county clerk, circuit clerk, treasurer, assessor, district court and coroner are all uncontested and being sought by the incumbents. Four of the nine county constable positions have multiple candidates as well. Mike Mullins, who has recently spoke out regarding constable authority and responsibilities, is not seeking office. Voters of Boughton Township will choose between Kevin Taylor Sr., Davey Jones, Carolyn Mullins and Clint Mullins. In Georgia Township, Gary Hicks and Ben Ratcliff have each filed. Tim McBrayer and J.W. Casto are seeing the Emmet Township position. Robert Henninger and Larry Miller are each running in Taylor Township. That position is currently held by Sean Clark who filled an unexpired term but said he had no intention of running. Constable positons at Albany, Caney, Parker, Liberty and Missouri townships are uncontested. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
