Student names K-9 officerJoe PhelpsPublished Wednesday, March 19, 2008 in the Gurdon Times The Gurdon Police Department has a new officer. K-9 Officer Badge was purchased by the GPD in January and was officially named by Gurdon Primary School student Jazmine Louise Johnson. The police department held a contest for students from Gurdon Primary School to name the K-9. The students were given the option to offer their chosen names and write an essay to support the reason behind their choice. About 150 students submitted their ideas and in essay form to name the officer. Johnson, one of Mrs. Forthmans third graders, won the contest with the name Badge. About her choice, she wrote, The first thing I thought of is an officers badge. I know this dog would be proud to have this name, because to have an officers badge is an honor. It takes hard work and dedication to earn a badge, and I feel like this K-9 dog would earn the name Badge ... Give him the respect that officers get by wearing a badge. Call him Badge! Johnson received a certificate from the Gurdon Police Departments K-9 Unit, and her class won K-9 Crime Fighters T-shirts and a pizza party with the police department. Alexia Morgan, of Mrs. Alberts third grade class, won second place with the name she chose, Chase. She wrote, It ... will be a good n ame because it is what he will be good for is to chase the bad guys down. Gabby Gonzales, of Mrs. Thomas kindergarten class, won third place with the name she chose, Copper. She wrote, My name for the dog is Copper because the first policemen had big copper buttons and badges on their uniforms, so people called them cops.
