Arkansas Heritage Theme For Art And Essay ContestPublished Wednesday, March 3, 1999 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP) and the Historic Preservation Alliance of Arkansas (HPAA) will sponsor the eighth annual Preserve Our Past (POP) art and essay contest for fifth grade Arkansas students, State Historic preservation officer Cathy Slater of the AHPP and HPAA executive director Jim Walsmith announced Feb. 20. The theme of the contest is the same as that of Arkansas Heritage Month - 'Arkansas Heritage: The Land and People.' Each artwork and essay should focus on a structure or site, at least 50 years old, that illustrates ways in which natural places help shape our man-made spaces. The deadline for entries is April 20. First place winners in each category will receive a $100 savings bond, second place winners will receive a $50 savings bond, and those receiving honorable mention will receive other prizes. The HPAA will present the savings bond. Winning entries will be displayed at the State Capitol in Little Rock during May, which is Arkansas Heritage Month, an annual celebration of Arkansas culture sponsored by the Department of Arkansas Heritage.
