City Hall to get steel roofJoe PhelpsPublished Wednesday, February 27, 2008 in the Gurdon Times Construction on the Gurdon Municipal Buildings new steel roof will begin any day now, according to contractor Terry Hughes. The project should last a couple weeks, Hughes said. The roof, which was paid for by grants from the Horace C. Cabe Foundation and from a surplus from the Arkansas State general improvement funds, cost $28,500. Arkansas State Senator Percy Malone and Clark Couny Judge Ron Daniell presented a check for $15,000 Wednesday, Feb. 20. Malone also funded $25,000 toward remodeling the municipal building in 1999. Currently, the roof of the municipal building is made of composite shingles. Tambra Childres, city recorder and treasurer, said they are having trouble with water leaks. Water, Childres said, leaks down the walls and underneath the flooring of the building, as well as in the windows. There are several leaks throughout the building, including the water department. Its in pretty bad shape, Hughes said. I dont know what keeps it from leaking (more than what it does now). The new roof will be made of 26-gauge steel panels, and should solve the leaking problem. They shouldnt have to worry about leaks for another 40-50 years, Hughes said. The new roof ought to last a long, long time the rest of my life, anyway.
