Georgia Pacific lays off two dozenJoe PhelpsPublished Wednesday, February 20, 2008 in the Gurdon Times About two dozen hourly-paid workers have been laid off at the Georgia Pacific plant in Gurdon as a result of current market conditions, GP spokesperson Julie Davis said Friday, Feb. 15. The lay-offs were only in one part of the plant in Gurdon, and so far has only affected the night shifts and only part of the business, Davis said. The Gurdon facility includes a lumber production line and a plywood production mill. Details regarding which part of the plant is impacted were not available at press time. The change, according to Davis, is not permanent, but there is no specific time frame as to when the workers will be able to work again. We all wish we had a crystal ball to know when the market will improve, Davis said, but well just have to continue to monitor the market and go from there. More than 50,000 people are employed by Georgia Pacific nationwide. The Gurdon plant has more than 550 employees, even after the lay-offs took place, according to information from GP.
