The Prescott City Council took the first steps toward approval of a new commercial business in Prescott.

Tiger Cat Equipment plans to locate in the Nevada County Industrial Park. As incentive for locating locally, the council approved a resolution granting the company $100,000 and 10 acres of land in the industrial park.

Mary Godwin, speaking for the Nevada County Economic Development Office, said the property is currently zoned industrial and that she will be returning to the council soon with a request to rezone that property to allow for the commercial business.

Questioned by council members, Godwin and Prescott City Attorney Glenn Vasser said they have endeavored to ensure that the company remains a viable business in Prescott.

Is there any way for us to see that they stay any longer than Sunshine Furniture? asked Councilman Jerry Wilson.

We have put in every safeguard that we can, Godwin said.

Vasser added that the attorneys for Tiger Cat have not yet approved the contract.

Vasser said one of the strings attached to the money is that it will be the final $100,000 of the project. That means the company wont receive the money until the end of the construction phase. If the company leaves within two years, the property reverts to the city.

If we get seven or 10 years out of them, I figure we got our moneys worth, Vasser said.

Godwin said the company plans to sell equipment and to offer a repair service. They have a successful business in Warren and believe the Prescott location will serve a large region of potential customers. The initial plan calls for hiring six employees with the possibility of more over the next few years.

Godwin said the money is city money that is used to help us in our recruitment.

Theyre not spending four or five thousand to flop, said Councilman James Roy Cornelius.
