Bluff CityJerry McKelvyPublished Wednesday, March 3, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune I don't know if you noticed, but through some mix-up, last week's news was a reprint of the news from the week before. Therefore, some of the following should have appeared last week. The Sellers Family spent a weekend at Millwood Lake during the last cool spell, searching for a mess of fish. I didn't hear of any trophy catches, but they enjoyed themselves anyway. Linda Carman has been under the weather the last several days, but she is some better now. Mrs. Lucille Kirk's family honored her with a surprise birthday party and a meal at Wood's Place in Camden. She celebrated her 90th birthday on February 20. I was feeling a little sad last week. It was one year ago that this community lost a fine lady. Mrs. Elsie Beaver (1908-1998) was a Christian lady who was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was always a frail person, probably never weighing much over 100 pounds, but her heart was full of love. I enjoyed listening to her tell stories about growing up in this area many years ago. Mrs. Beaver was raised on a farm about one mile southwest of Bluff City. She was the daughter of Walter and Julia Moore. She taught school in the 1920's at Gum Grove and Lackland, but had to quit to care for her ailing mother. She later married and moved to Chidester, but returned to Bluff City several years ago after the death of her husband to be near her family. She enjoyed going to church and studied her Bible everyday. Many times she attended church when she didn't really feel like going, but wanted to be an inspiration to the young people. She loved good singing and especially loved the hymn Amazing Grace. She would probably not want me to write all this in the paper, but she deserves it. She was a special person to me and all her friends in Bluff City miss her very much. Our mayor, Millard McBride, informs me that the tornado siren for Bluff City has been tested and should be operational this spring. The siren is located at the fire station and could prove to be a valuable addition to the community. Make plans now for your own safety in case of a storm or if you hear the siren during stormy weather. Bluff City is beginning to resemble a chicken with its feathers missing due to all the timber being cut along Highway 24. Maybe the wounds will be healed with the passage of time. Our thought this week: "After all is said and done, a lot more has been said than done." Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
