A woman and her nephew were injured in a house fire in Gurdon on Friday, Dec. 14.

According to Gurdon Fire Chief Robert Burns, the Gurdon Fire Department was called to a house fire at 207 E. Miller St. around 3:45 a.m. By the time firefighters were on scene, the entire front of the house was engulfed in flames, but the occupants were still inside.

Burns said the woman and her nephew were trapped in a back bedroom and were able to break a window and escape the flames but were severely injured by the broken glass. They were cut up pretty seriously, he said.

The two were transported by ambulance to Baptist Health Medical Center-Arkadelphia. Their condition was unknown after they left the scene.

Burns said the house was a total loss. There was no gas service to the house leaving Burns to believe that the fire may have been caused by an electric heater. He said there was no way to determine the exact cause of the blaze due to the heavy damage.

The house was owned by the First Baptist Church of Gurdon, Burns said. The church rented the house.

The nine firefighters that responded were on scene until 6 a.m.
