The recent death of a county constable created an open position, which the Nevada County Quorum Court unanimously voted to fill during their regular December meeting, held Dec. 10.

Shawn Clark of Emmet was recommended for the position by Bobby Hardin. Hardin, addressing the quorum court, cited Clarks integrity as the reason for the endorsement.

I feel firmly, as do others, that hell deal fairly, Hardin said.

By law, the person appointed to fulfill the unexpired term is not eligible to run for that position in the next election. Asked if he realized that, Clark said thats the reason he agreed to take the position.

I want anybody who wants to run next time to have that chance, Clark said.

Nevada County Sheriff Bobby Carlton said the sheriffs office and deputies work closely with the constables and said that he approves of Clark for the position.

I believe hell be an asset, Carlton said.

The quorum court voted their approval for Clark to fill the unexpired term but the formal appointment must come from the governor. Nevada County Judge Baker Butler said he expects the governor to follow the countys recommendation in the matter.

James Osborn died Nov. 16 at his home in Emmet. For more than 10 years he had served as constable for more than 10 years and had been an auxiliary deputy.
