Samuel ShaverPublished Wednesday, November 28, 2007 in the Nevada County PicayuneSamuel L. Shaver, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at his residence. He was a native of ElDorado, and was the son of the late Jewel F. Shaver and Anna Idell Nash Yarbrough. Dr. Shaver graduated from American International College, Springfield, MA (BS) in 1946 with the distinction of valedictorian. He also graduated from the University of Rochester, NY with an MA in 1950 and a PhD in 1951. In 1958 he graduated from the University of Arkansas Medical Center with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree and a Phi Beta Kappa designation. He served his medical residency with the United States Public Health Service. In 1960, Dr. Shaver opened a Practical General Medical practice in Belmont, N.C. During the period 1960-1989 he provided medical care for the people of Belmont. He delivered babies, made house calls and, in his spare time, provided medical services to the South Point High School football team until 1986. He was a breeder of 25 AKC champion dogs, 13 Best in Show and a Group Winner in the 1986 Westminster Dog Show. Dr. Shaver was a member of the Board of General Medicine and The American Board of Family Practice. He was also a charter member of the South Point Life Saving Crew, Commander of the American Legion Post #144, 5th Division Commander, State Commander and served on the Board to the National Commander. Dr. Shaver was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. His survivors include his wife, Billie James Shaver of the home; son, Robert Brady Shaver; daughter, Samantha Shaver; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Jewel F. Shaver and Jessie Lou Shaver; daughter, Elizabeth Shaver Elrod; and step-son, Paul Nick Entas, Jr. Prayer service was at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Bumgardner Chapel, McLean Funeral Directors - Belmont, 515 North Central Avenue, Belmont, N.C. 28012. Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery with Military Rites by the Gaston County Last Man Club. Visitation was from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20, at McLean Funeral Directors of Belmont.
