Wolves' season ends at BauxiteBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, November 28, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune The Prescott Curley Wolves have been eliminated from the playoffs with a loss against the Bauxite Miners on Nov. 23 with a final score of 47-35. According to Prescott Coach Greg Smith, the loss can be put down to mistakes. That was a good football team, Smith said of the Miners. The team that made the fewest mistakes won the ball game. Smith said those mistakes came late in the game and that the Wolves went into halftime satisfied with their performance. At halftime, the score was tied at 21. We knew they had the ball and we had to get it stopped, Smith said. The Wolves managed to block a field goal, giving the Prescott team the advantage. That could have been the play that won the game, Smith said. We played a great third quarter. Then the Wolves turned over the ball on a fumble and the Miners were soon up by two touchdowns. The mistakes we made were our mistakes, Smith said. They didnt force us into them. The key, according to Smith, is that the Bauxite Miners are a good football team that remained strong throughout the game. When you get that deep in the playoffs, only quality teams are left. Its been awhile since weve had to play four quarters to beat somebody. Smith said the Wolves are losing several key players this year - five defensive and five offensive starters will graduate. There are some returning players who have field time and Smith said the time between now and the beginning of next season will be spent looking back on this season and training. Were going to break the season down, Smith said. He said theyll review tapes of games and look at ways to improve while getting the off-season training started. Basically, were going to train them and work them and kill them till next season, Smith said. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
