Merchant open house plannedBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, November 14, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune Christmas open house is planned for Nov. 18, from 1-4 p.m. and area merchants are gearing up for the annual promotion. The event began several years ago as a way to encourage local shopping. Nevada County Chamber of Commerce Director Mary Godwin said the participating merchants will offer specials and those visiting the stores will have the opportunity to register for one of three cash prizes - $150, $100 and $50. Thedrawing will be held the following Monday. Its done very well for us in the past, Godwin said. For the merchants, theres an official kick off for the Christmas shopping season. For the shoppers, there are great deals and the chance to get a good start on their shopping lists. Naturally, the goal is to encourage shopping at home so that money remains in the county. Besides that, the stores offer an array of gifts that wont be found at the major retailers. Merchants typically offer refreshments and stores will be decorated for Christmas, Godwin said. Its just a very festive day, Godwin said. Participating merchants are Bakers Best Stop, Broadway Cafi, Dollar General, Etcetera, Fashion Shop, Farm and Garden Store, Freds, Loves, Olivers One Stop, Picket Fence, Pieces of the Past, Pizza Hut, PSE, Prescott Flowers, ReDesigns, Rehkopfs, Shell Superstop, Sonic Drive-In, Style by Heather and Truckers Restaurant.
