On my mind: Another festival in the books

What a festival!

I thought the 27th annual Gurdon Forest Festival was a great success, and everyone Ive talked to has seemed to think so, too. Everyone from the vendors to those who performed on stage did an outstanding job.

I must admit that my favorite part of the festival seemed to be everyone elses favorite as well the Groovin Gurdon Jumpers. This group of jump ropers from Gurdon Primary School drew a huge crowd on Main Street. Tambra Childres, recorder/treasure for the City of Gurdon, said she had never seen that big of a crowd for anything that has ever been on the Main Street stage. I guess kids to draw a crowd.

A lot of work went into making the festival a success. It would be wrong not to acknowledge the hard work of Childres, festival coordinator Billy Wells and all of the CD&E Club.

I personally would like to acknowledge Jim Caldwell and the Gurdon Street Department. These men did an excellent job cleaning up downtown and re-painting the crosswalks and parking spaces to give the town that extra shine.

(I mention Jim and his crew because after they had already done the work, I went to him and asked him when they planned to do it. He wasnt happy that I hadnt noticed, and I dont think he plans to let me forget it.)

We cant forget the downtown merchants who cleaned up their properties to welcome visitors to town. Mike McKenzie and Mark King put decorations in the windows of the building they own at the corner of Second and Main streets. The display looks really good.

I know Ive not mentioned everyone who played a part in the festival, but I just wanted to hit the high points. Some have asked me why I didnt cover some of the events. I promise I didnt skip anyone on purpose, but there are only so many places one person with one camera can be at one time.

It wore me out! Billy has already informed me that we cant have another one until next year.

On another note, youve probably began to wonder if I just havent had anything on my mind lately because its been a while since Ive written a column. Truth be told, Ive had so much on my mind that I just havent had time to put my thoughts on paper.

Ill try to do better in the future. In the mean time, should you know of anything and I do mean anything happening in our community, please let me know. You can call the office at 353-4482 or email us at gurdontimes@yahoo.com. We check the email regularly.
