The view from Wendy's World: Picayune kicks off church pageBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, November 7, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune My goal ever since Ive been at the Picayune has been to make the paper fully community-based. To the best of my ability, Ive put names, faces and news out there that I believe the community to be interested in. Ive come to the conclusion that something is missing and were going to rectify it with the addition of a church page. Since we first started kicking this idea around, Ive seen it as a community-driven section for the paper. And were starting it with a cry for help from the churches of the county. Let me begin by saying that its not a cry for money! Any church in the county is eligible for listing on the church page at no cost. Heres how it will work. Well have a grid that will run each week - think of it as something similar to the tv guide that runs in some daily papers. That grid will include information for any area church that wants to be included. The church can list the name, pastors name, physical address and day and times of up to three services. Remember that well continue to welcome the dates and times of special events such as VBS, revival and homecoming. Church-related events will be included in a new section similar to the Here and There but will be on the church page. The next step for churches is to submit the information for the grid and then to let us know whenever theres something else going on. And dont forget to let us know how it went. If you had a spectacular turnout for homecoming, snap a photo or two and let us know. As always, well accept article submissions by fax at 887-2949, by mail at P.O. Box 60, at the office at 100 E. Elm or by email at ncpicayuneoffice@yahoo.com. Photos must be mailed or emailed and we can only accept the original or a photo-quality copy. Please keep in mind that your copy printed off an ordinary home printer is going to be very grainy in the newspaper and we typically cant accept those. Its my hope that the community will be enthused about the addition of this page and that we always have a waiting list for space on that page. Finally, were going to offer the opportunity for sponsorships and advertising on this page. Unfortunately, newspapers are businesses and weve got to pay the bills just like any other business. With that in mind, this page will include advertising. The amount will vary from one week to another but anyone who wants to be on this page can purchase space designated for that page on a first-come, first serve basis. When advertising space and sponsorships for the page are sold out, theyre simply gone for that week. In the newspaper business, space is everything. I hope patrons will bear with me as we work the kinks out of the process. On any week when there isnt sufficient church news to fill the page, well use the page for other things. Ive seen this work in other communities but have to admit that its a rather large undertaking for a weekly newspaper. I can see it working here but Im less the driving force in this instance than the community. Im anxious to see how the community responds. Feel free to call on us at 887-2002 for any additional information. For advertising information, call the office or contact Mary Putman at 777-8841.
