The Gurdon Junior Go-Devils moved to 4-3 on the season after a big win over the Lafayette County Junior Cougars at Gurdon on Thursday, Oct. 25.

The 42-12 victory gave the entire Gurdon junior high roster time to play during the final quarter. Junior Go-Devil Dairus Bailey (24) made several big plays during the game including four of six touchdowns.

The Junior Go-Devils kicked to begin the game. Lafayette County fumbled the kick, but recovered and began first and 10 at the 49. A holding call on the Junior Cougars pushed the team back to first and 23.

On first and 10 at the Junior Go-Devil 35, the Cougars fumbled the ball, and Gurdon recovered. Bailey made his first big play with a 65 yard touchdown run, putting the Junior Go-Devils on the board. Michael Henderson made it into the end zone for the two point conversion, bringing the score to 8-0.

The Junior Cougars were forced to punt on fourth and 15 on their next drive. The punt set Gurdon up first and 10 at their own 37. The Junior Go-Devils failed to get a first down and punted on fourth and eight.

After Junior Go-Devil Ryan Hooks dropped the Cougars in the backfield for a huge loss, a personal foul on Gurdon set Lafayette County up first and 10.

The Cougars made quick work of getting down the field, assisted by a pass interference call against the Junior Go-Devils. The Junior Cougars got the ball in from the one yard line with 5:59 remaining in the first half. A two point conversion attempt was not successful, and the score was 8-6.

Gurdon began its next possession on the Lafayette County 48 yard line. Bailey picked up the next first down at the 37 after an offsides call on the Junior Cougars. A false start penalty later pushed the Junior Go-Devils back to second and 10.

A pass by quarterback Jared Shaver was completed to Bailey from the 25 yard line for another touchdown. On the two point conversion, Lafayette County was called for offsides, and the Go-Devils picked up half the distance to the goal, making the two point conversion even easier. The score was 16-6.

The Junior Go-Devils on-side kick on the return was fumbled by the Junior Cougars, and Gurdon regained possession. Bailey took the ball all the way to the end zone on the first play, picking up a 47 yard touchdown. The pass to the end zone on the two point conversion attempt was intercepted. The score moved to 22-6 where it remained for the remainder of the half.

In the second half, the Junior Go-Devils wasted no time furthering their lead. With only 1:15 off of the clock, Henderson took the ball in from the two yard line after a run that took him from the 45 to the two. The score moved out to 28-5 after an unsuccessful two point conversion attempt.

On the return, the on-sides kick was fumbled again, and the Junior Go-Devils recovered. Shaver, on a quarterback keeper picked up four yards out to the Go-Devils 49. An incomplete pass to Henderson kept the team at third and six at the 45. The teams bad luck streak ended when Bailey took the ball in 45 yards for another touchdown. The score was 34-6 after an unsuccessful two point conversion.

The Cougars picked up their second and final touchdown of the night on third and seven from their own 42. The fifty-two yard run brought the score to 34-12. The two point conversion attempt was fumbled.

The Junior Go-Devils had a hard time moving the ball down the field and punted on fourth and ten after being penalized for delay of game.

On the Junior Cougars first play of their ensuing drive, Shaver made his second interception of the night setting up the Junior Go-Devils first and 10 at their own 48.

A pass to Henderson was good for another touchdown, and the successful two point conversion brought the score to 42-12 where it remained until the end of the game.

The Junior Go-Devil will take on the Prescott Curley Cubs in a make-up game at Go-Devil Stadium in Gurdon on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Kick-off is at 7 p.m.
