Gurdon City Hall needs a new roof.

Gurdon Mayor Clayton Franklin and Recorder/Treasurer Tambra Childres told the Gurdon City Council about the latest water problems at Gurdon City Hall during its meeting on Monday, Oct. 22. Water problems have plagued the building in the past, and one outside wall in the board room has already had to be repaired due to water damage.

The other wall is rotting now, Childres said, and the water is causing the wood laminate floor in the room to buckle.

Franklin said a new metal roof would cost the city about $27,000, and he believes that is the best way to stop the damage because an overhang could be added to the existing roof line.

Its leaked ever since Ive been here, Franklin said.

The building has been re-roofed in the past, but it continues to leak.

Childres said State Sen. Percy Malone has pledged $15,000 from state general improvement funds for the project. The city will be seeking a grant to complete the project.

In other business, Childres told the council that a grant application to the Louis Cabe Foundation was approved to purchase a 16 foot community Christmas tree to be added to the citys large light display. Childres noted special thanks should go to Anita Cabe of the foundation.

You know she loves the Christmas lights, she said.

Franklin also gave the council an update on the status of a city program to clean up abandoned, dilapidated houses.

To date, 27 houses have been removed so far. Another 28 houses have been inspected and are almost ready to begin the demolition, but that will likely wait until the first of the year.

With so few employees, weve got to do Forest Festival and the Christmas lights first, Childres said.

The other projects will give the city time to have the utilities disconnected from all of the properties and get all of the inspections finalized. Once the street department is ready to begin on the houses again, she said they should move pretty quick.
