Wolves set scoring record against Fouke

Panthers are quiet killing machines that hunt alone. Wolves hunt in packs, and track their game as far as it takes to make sure the pack eats, for their strength comes from the pack, not the individual. Rudyard Kipling said something akin to this in his epic The Jungle Book, and his words were never more truthful than on last Friday nights meeting between the Fouke Panthers and the Prescott Curley Wolves in Cummins Stadium.

To sum it up, the pack feasted on this night as the Curley Wolf offense turned in the largest total points in one game that any sports history buff could remember. Nine touchdowns and a field goal marked a festive night for Homecoming as Queen Logan Joyce reigned over a monstrous victory for the ages. If Ms. Joyces reign is any indicator of the season, maybe we should have Homecoming again next week.

The night began with Prescott receiving the opening kick-off and preparing to go on the offensive. However, the offense never got the chance, as Kalin Hall took the opening kick-off home with an 82 yard kick-off return for the first score of the night. Jordan Banks kick was good, and with 11:46 to play in the first quarter, Prescott led 7-0. Fouke was not going to go down easily, as they opened the game with a 32 yard completion off the waggle pass to get inside Prescott territory. Fouke would founder after the first play, and eventually punt to Prescott . The Prescott team seemed a little frustrated, as Fouke used a Rugby style kick all night in order to delay the return man for Prescott. However, Prescott did not turn the ball over on the punts, and did manage to create respectful returns against the Fouke defense.

The second drive of the night for Prescott started out with Termaine Henderson hitting Jermaine Henderson for a 17 yard completion to move Prescott out of a hole. DeMarcus Collier took over on the ground and moved the ball downfield for a first down on two consecutive runs. Henderson attempted to hit Henderson again, but the ball was tipped up and Fouke got under it for an interception. The Panthers were able to return the ball inside the Prescott 20 yard line to set up their second drive of the night. Working the Wing-T offense, using run, screens and waggles, Fouke put the ball into the end zone in five plays to tie the score 7-7 with 6:26 to play in the first quarter. Hall got the kick-off again, and worked his way inside Fouke territory to the 46 yard line to start the third drive of the night. On the fourth play of the drive, B.J. Haynie punched it in from 11 yards out to take the lead. Banks was good, and Prescott took a 14-7 lead with 4:58 to play. The Prescott defense held Fouke to a three-and-out, and Prescott got good field position at the Fouke 47 to start the next drive. With only three plays, Henderson hit Tony Gillard for a 14 yard scoring completion and, of course, Banks was good to extend the lead to 21-7 with 2:34 to play in the first. Prescott s defense came up big again and forced another three-and-out for Fouke. Three plays later, Chris Anderson ran it in for a 19 yard touchdown to extend the lead to 28-7 (Banks was good) with no time left on the clock in the first quarter.

Fouke could only manage a four-and-out on its next possession, as Prescott took over on the Panther 46 yard line. Henderson hit Micah McCoy for a big gain, and then Collier glided in for a 21 yard touchdown to take the lead to 35-7 with 8:56 to play in the second. Fouke got tired of the punting, and put together a sixteen play drive to score a 22 yard field goal with 1:24 to play in the half. This brought the score to 35-10. Prescott got in a hurry on this next possession, and on the fifth play of the drive, Henderson threw to a spot that just happened to not have a Curley Wolf in it. The Panther in it did make the interception, and returned the ball to the Prescott 13 yard line to set up a first down. The Prescott receiver had slipped and stumbled on his cut, causing him to be late to the spot. The Prescott defense held for the first two plays, but on 3rd and 13, Fouke hit the tailback on a throwback play to score a touchdown. With the extra point, Fouke closed to 35-17 with .23 seconds to play in the half. Prescott took over, and on 2nd and 5 from the 49, Henderson hit McCoy for a completion to the Fouke 19 yard line. With time running out, Prescott got a time-out and was able to get the field goal team on the field. Banks pitch shot from 36 was good, and Prescott went in at the half leading 38-17.

Fouke took the opening kick-off, but fumbled to Prescott on the first play at their 27 yard line. The next play was a Fouke penalty, moving the ball to the 17, and Haynie did the rest. With Haynies 17 yard run and Banks kick, Prescott took a 45-17 lead with 11:14 to play in the third. Fouke put together another long nine play drive to score a touchdown with 7:57 to play in the third to take the score to 45-23. Fouke did not lie down and give up in this game. They fought hard all night. Prescott took over on the 35 yard line after the kick went out-of-bounds, and a healthy dose of fullback James Threadgill nine plays later put the ball in the end zone. Prescott took a 51-23 lead with 4:43 to play in the third. Fouke would go three-and-out again, and give the ball back to Prescott on the 49 going in. Four plays later, Hall would punch it in from 13 yards out and with Banks kick, Prescott took a 59-23 lead with 1:42 to play in the third. The mercy rule kicked in, but I am not sure Prescott planned any mercy on this night.

Fouke could only manage five more plays as they had to punt again to Prescott. Jordan Williamson came in at quarterback, and put together an eight play drive hitting Gavin McCauley handing off to Ray Smith to move the ball down to the 1 yard line. Smith punched it in for the last score of the night to take the lead to 65-23 with approximately 2:57 to play in the game. Banks kick was no good (must have been tired), and the scoring would end on that note.

The regular season will be over for the Curley Wolves on Thursday night of this week as they host the Magnet Cove Panthers for game ten of the season.

The Junior High Curley Wolves captured the district title on last Thursday night with an impressive win over the Fouke Junior High 24-14. Both teams played well, and it has been a pleasure to watch this Junior High team improve over the course of the season. The Junior High are slated to play for the outright undefeated championship on Tuesday night, Oct. 30, in Gurdon. See the Nov. 7 edition of the Picayune for game details.
