Work has begun on the planning of this years Christmas light display in Gurdon, according to city Recorder/Treasurer Tambra Childres.

Most of the displays from last year will be the same, but Childres is hoping to make a rather large addition to the display with a 16 foot base lighted garland Christmas tree.

We would love to make an addition to our display by adding this 16 foot garland lighted Christmas tree, Childres said in a grant request submitted to the Lewis Cabe Foundation. This would surely be a wonderful addition to the city that the entire community would enjoy.

The tree will cost $3,500 plus an additional $500 for freight as it weighs several hundred pounds, she said.

The city has requested $5,000 in the grant application so that the additional $1,000 can be used to purchase new extension cords and spotlights for the display.

Should the city be able to purchase the tree, Childres said she intends to place it in a location where it will be seen as soon as people come into town.

Gurdons Christmas light display has been growing every year, Childres said, and the city will once again be on the Arkansas Holiday Trail of Lights that will go through the holiday season.

As soon as the Gurdon Forest Festival is over, Childres said city crews will begin to prepare the Christmas decorations. All of the decorations are expected to be up and operational before Thanksgiving.
