The Lafayette County Cougars traveled to Prescott this past Friday night to play the Curley Wolves in what was expected to be a major speed bump in the race to the conference championship.

Prescott has stumbled against the Go-Devils of Gurdon, and this game was suspected to be just as physical as the game in week four of the season. This is the reason games are played and scores are kept. This game got out of hand quickly and decisively as the Curley Wolves took out some frustrations and practiced several different looks to coast to a 49-6 victory in the cool October evening.

The game started with Jordan Banks putting the Cougars into a hole as they started their first drive of the night on their own 2-yard line. Seven plays and 20 yards later, the Cougars punted to Prescott. Prescott started their first drive of the night on their own 46-yard line, and began the adventure with a well thrown ball from Termaine Henderson to Jermaine Henderson for a 21-yard completion. DeMarcus Collier and the Wild Wolf offense came in and two plays later punched it in with a 10-yard run from Collier for the first of seven touchdowns on the evening. Banks kick was good (Ill say this six more times in this article), and Prescott led 7-0 with 7:48 to play in the first quarter.

Again Banks pinned the Cougars deep, and six plays later Prescott s Kalin Hall intercepted a pass to end the drive. Prescott would intercept four passes this evening to put a lid on any hopes by the Cougars of challenging the Wolves. Nine plays later, mixing the pass and run, Travaro Coulter capped off a good drive with a 19-yard scamper to take the score to 13-0 with 2:10 to play in the first. Banks was good, and Prescott led 14-0. Prescott was able to score in each of the four quarters, and this really deflated the Cougars as they never really challenged.

The next Lafayette possession ended with a fumble lost after seven plays and 12-yards gained. On the second play of the drive, Henderson hit Henderson for a 68-yard touchdown strike to extend the lead to 20-0 with 11:43 to play in the second quarter. Banks was good again, and Prescott led 21-0. Banks pinned them deep again, and after four plays, the Cougars punted the ball away. Prescott s punt receiver muffed the catch, and Lafayette recovered for their best field position of the night.

On the third play of the drive, Prescotts Marquis Wilson intercepted the ball to end the drive. On this possession, it got a little confusing for the defense as well as the fans. Four different players took snaps for the Curley Wolves in four different offensive looks. Coulter and Hall in the Wild Wolf, Henderson in the Multiple I and Drew Loe in an offensive formation that resembles a power running/spread attack. Hall finished the ten play/66-yard drive with a 9-yard run for the fourth score of the night. Banks was good, and Prescott took a 28-0 lead with 5:09 to play in the half. Lafayette would have another pass intercepted by Hall, force Prescott to punt, and then put together an eight play drive aided by a personal foul penalty to attempt a 45 yard field goal. The kick was well short, and the half ended with Prescott holding an impressive 28-0 lead.

Prescott opened the second half with the ball on their 20-yard line, and after six plays, were forced o punt the ball away to Lafayette. The next play found Daron Purifoy intercepting a pass to give Prescott great field position at the Lafayette 30-yard line for their second offensive drive of the second half. Collier and Loe will bounce back and forth at quarterback, confusing the Cougar defense beyond measure on this drive, with Henderson finishing it off with an 8-yard pass to Ivan Young for the score. Banks was good, and Prescott took a 35-0 lead with 5:55 to play in the third. The 35 point lead started the Mercy Rule, and the clock would continuously run for the rest of the game, regardless of how many points Lafayette may or may not score. The third quarter would end with this score.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Prescott will have a punt blocked and recovered in the end zone for the only Cougar score of the night. The extra point kick was no good, and Prescott held a 35-6 lead with 10:55 to go and clock still running. Prescott recovered the on-side kick on the 47-yard line. Chris Anderson took the first play from scrimmage 53 yards on an electrifying run to score the sixth Curley Wolf touch down of the night. Banks was good, and Prescott led 42-6 with approximately 7:11 to play in the game. Prescott forced a Lafayette fumble and took over on the cougar 19-yard line. Five plays later, James Threadgill punched it in from 9 yards out to move the score to 48-6. Banks was good on his final attempt of the night, and Prescott watched the clock run down on a grand effort by both offense and defense for the night.

I must mention the exemplary play of senior center Jeremy Glass as he had to adjust to so many different quarterbacks during the night. The exchange between center and quarterback is the most important of any offensive play, because it starts the play. The different styles of quarterbacks, as well as size and speed differences, made the center/quarterback exchange particularly impressive for the nights work. Well done Mr. Glass.

Prescott will travel to Rosboro this week to play the Centerpoint Knights in the last road game of the regular season. The Wolves will finish at home against Fouke in week 9 and Magnet Cove in week 10.

The Junior Curley Wolves will play their last home game this Thursday night against Centerpoint as they travel to Fouke and Gurdon to finish the season.

Anyone who can should turn out to watch these Wolves, the Wolf-pride Marching Band and Cheerleaders perform. They take a lot of pride in their efforts, as well as they should, for they do spend a lot of time and effort on them.
