Courage House has sale on Trade DaysBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, October 10, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune Anyone looking for a great garage sale should check out the Courage House storage building, located at 102 East Elm St. Courage House is an organization dedicated to helping women and children in family crisis situations. The organizers have opened a branch in Prescott dedicated to storage of clothing, furniture, appliances and household items. Every Trade Days, advocate Elaine McCauley opens the doors to the public for a gigantic garage sale. Proceeds go to the Courage House. The shelter is located in Arkadelphia but McCauley said the organization serves several counties, including Nevada. When domestic abuse takes control of a family, the abuser often isolates the victim, leaving them with little or no money to make another start on their own. He may even hunt them down, McCauley said. McCauley said Courage House provides housing, 24-7, for those women and children who need shelter, but have an array of other services available. One of those is a hotline for victims of domestic abuse. There is also an outreach program that provides support ranging from financial assistance to basic needs - such as clothing. Another service offered by the advocates of Courage House is simply helping those in need find the services that can help them survive, go back to school, get housing or even provide counseling. With domestic violence, our priority is to help them fit into their new community, McCauley said. And to maintain that. When an individual or family moves out of the shelter, Courage House helps with clothing, appliances and furniture. McCauley said victims often have little or nothing other than the clothes on their backs. Starting over is made a little easier with the help of donations. The money raised from the Courage House garage sales goes directly back into the organization. The items offered for sale are the excess that no one currently in the shelter or the outreach needs. McCauley said volunteers and items for the sale are always accepted. For more information about Courage House, to reach help with domestic violence issues, or to make a monetary or time donation, call 246-3122. Cheryl Allen Cooper is the director and Kim McKay is the housing supervisor. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
