DEEP BREATHING

Published Wednesday, March 10, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

BRINGS RELIEF Sometimes life gets a little stressful. Here is one of the best techniques for releasing tension and reducing stress:

  1. Sit quietly in a comfortable position and close your eyes.
  2. Alternate tensing and relaxing each set of muscles progressing from your feet to your face.
  3. Breathe through your nose, inhaling and exhaling slowly as you relax. As you exhale, say the word "one" silently to yourself.
  4. Keep your eyes closed for 10 to 20 minutes, opening them only to check the time.
  5. Keep your mind passive and clear, allowing your body to relax at its own pace. Don't try to force deep relaxation.
  6. Continue to say the word "one" silently as you exhale. Try hard to ignore any disruptions.
