On my mind: Welcome, GHS journalism class!

Every now and then we get a good idea. Im excited to introduce one of those ideas this week The Devils Diary.

The Devils Diary is a student produced page of news happening in and around the Gurdon School District. All of the copy, editing and page construction is done by the journalism class at Gurdon High School and its sponsor, Jennifer Byrd.

Our plan for now is to have the page appear once each month.

Im excited about the new feature for several reasons, but most notably because were getting students involved in real journalism. I hope at least one of the catches the journalism bug and pursues a career in newspaper work.

I think well see a variety of stories from the journalism class as the year progresses. Mrs. Byrd hopes to get the students out of their comfort zones to report on issues at Cabe Middle School and Gurdon Primary School as well. So, as much as we like to see news from GHS, I expect to see it spread out amongst the campuses.

I had the opportunity to stop in during journalism class one day earlier in the semester. The students and I bounced ideas off of each other as to how the page would come together, and I left them with the idea that they should just make it their own. They surpassed my expectations.

I have been especially happy when the journalism students have come to me at football games or at other events where Ive been and asked if they could do certain things with their page. This lets me know they are excited about having the opportunity to put their names in print.

We not only need to thank the journalism class and Mrs. Byrd for taking on this project, but the high school administration Principal Leonard Gills and Assistant Principal Scott Jones is also to be commended for allowing the students to partner with the newspaper.

Big week for GHS

While were on the topic of Gurdon High School, this is a big week for students and teachers as homecoming is Friday night.

Homecoming is a big week for any school, but I expect there will be even more hype at Go-Devil Stadium Friday night than usual after the Go-Devils big win over Prescott last week.

I hope everyone makes it out to the various homecoming activities this week. Im planning to be there. Look for full coverage in the Gurdon Times next week.

Were proud to be your hometown newspaper!
