It was a record setting year for the Gurdon Chamber of Commerce as it held its annual live and silent auction on Tuesday, Sept. 18.

According to event coordinator Anita Cabe, one of the most exciting records is the amount of money raised. The event brought in more than $12,000 which will be split between the Gurdon High School auditorium fund and the chambers fund to purchase a new electronic message board for Gurdon.

About $9,600 was raised in 2006 and was the most that had been raised to date.

The record fund raising could be attributed to the record crowd that was in attendance, Cabe said. About 175 people attended the event and came from all over Clark County. There were just over 100 in attendance last year, and Cabe said she was happy to see such a large increase in the number.

Items ranging from gift certificates to home decor and sports memorabilia were auctioned in the silent auction that began at 6 p.m. Dinner was served shortly after and was catered by the Gurdon High School cafeteria staff. The traditional turkey and dressing with all of the trimmings was served.

The live auction began after dinner. Everything from a large, hand crafted insulated dog house to tickets to Arkansas Razorbacks games and guided fishing trips were auctioned.

Cabe said the event would not have been possible without the donations from area businesses and the support given by the community. I appreciate all of the different ways of support, she said.
