Wolves win big, Gurdon's nextBy Scoops Allsports - For the PicayunePublished Wednesday, September 26, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune The Prescott Curley Wolves traveled to Bismarck on Friday for their defense of the 2006 7-3A title. The weather was cool and inviting, but the competition was blown away by another outstanding ground game by the offense, and a tenacious defense that allowed only 85 yards total offense for the Lions. Nine Curley Wolves carried the ball for 256 yards, and six receivers accumulated 179 yards in catches as the young players had an opportunity to shine. These young men accounted for eight touchdowns as the Lions never really had much of a chance against such a stacked deck. In fact, Bismarck s best defense was Prescott penalties that canceled three scores for the night. The night started out as right as it ever can for a kicker, as Jordan Banks catapulted the opening kick-off into the end zone for a touch-back. Bismarck ran three plays for a negative 3 yards and punted to the Wolves. Prescott started their first drive of the night on the Bismarck 33 yard line thanks to a 19 yard punt return. Junior quarterback Termaine Henderson opened the game with a quick hitch pass to his brother Jermaine Henderson for a nine yard gain. DeMarcus Collier got the call on the next play and took it 24 yards. Collier ran again for what appeared to be the first score of the night, but the play was called back due to a costly penalty. On the very next play, Henderson hooked up with Henderson again for a 24 yard touchdown score. Banks knocked it good for a 7-0 lead with 8:34 to play in the 1st quarter. Banks hammered another beauty on the kick-off, and Bismarck started again from their own 20 yard line. The second drive of the night for Bismarck ended the same way, as the Prescott defense forced a 4th and 12 punt after only three plays. Collier got the call this time, and after two good hard runs, punched it in from the 16 yard line for the touchdown. Banks missed on the P.A.T., and Prescott led 13-0 with 5:38 to play in the first quarter. Bismarck started the third drive of the night from their 25 yard line, and managed eight plays and a first down before punting on 4th and 14. Prescott s third series of the night had James Threadgills good run knocked away with a Bismarck penalty, setting up a 28 yard scamper by B. J. Haynie to the 2 yard line. Henderson connected with Tony Gillard in the end zone, and Banks put it through for a 20-0 lead with 1:14 to play in the 1st quarter. Bismarck had a great return on the ensuing kick-off, but could only muster 6 yards before turning the ball back over to Prescott. Kalin Hall got the call this time and scampered up and down the field as only he can before sophomore quarterback Jordan Williamson connected with sophomore C. J. Smith for a 47 yard touchdown pass and catch. Banks kicked it good, and the door was shut on Bismarck s hopes for the night. With 11:06 to play in the second quarter, Prescott led 27-0. Bismarck went three and out, and Prescott settled down for what would be a long drive on this night. After six plays, mixing the run with Travaro Coulter and Rashad Blakely, as well as the pass with a completion to Gavin McCauley, Williamson finally connected with Ivan Young for an eight yard score to bring the score to 34-0 after Banks kick was good with 6:32 to play in the half. Bismarck again got a good return, but went three plays and a punt to pin Prescott on their own 9 yard line to start the drive. Distance did not seem to bother Prescott on this night with all these ponies in the stable ready to run. Blakely took the first play 5 yards to get Prescott out of a tight spot, and Haynie capped it off with an 86 yard sprint for the score. Again Banks kick was good, and the Wolves stood with a 41-0 lead to end the half. Prescott ran only twenty- one plays in the first half, amassing 391 yards of total offense, while the defense allowed Bismarck only 22 yards. The 41-0 lead is the largest half-time lead for the Wolves in recent memory. The second half got under way the same as the first, except the mercy rule was in effect, and the defense got in on the fun as Trent Barrow picked up a fumble on Bismarck s second play and flew 85 yards for the score. This is the Curley Wolves second defensive score for the year, and probably will not be the last, as Prescott took a 48-0 lead with 9:38 to play in the 3rd quarter. The game went fast after this as the continuous clock drained the game to a quick and merciful end. Prescott would answer a Bismarck touchdown with another score of their own as Banks and McCauley set the block down on the Bismarck 33 yard line for a 43 yard field goal attempt. McCauleys hold was good, and Banks aim was true as Prescott ended the scoring for the night with a field goal to take a 51-0 lead. Prescott will host Gurdon this Friday night in the Traveling Trophy game. This game has taken on much more importance recently as Gurdon has again rejoined Prescott as a conference opponent. Gurdon is coming off of a big win themselves, and thus two heavy weights of the 7-3A will meet at 7:30 p.m. in Cummins Stadium on the Sept. 28. I certainly hope you are able to attend the game and watch these young Wolves light up the night. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
