As his final action as a member of the Prescott School Board, Tom Cornelius made the motion that the board adjourn its Sept. 18 meeting.

The board dealt with a light agenda, granting travel for several district teachers and administrators to various workshops and approving the purchase of a firewall for the districts computer system. The firewall comes with a $148,000 price tag but Prescott Superintendent Hyacinth Deon said its necessary to keep the children safe while they are online. The price includes an annual maintenance contract at a cost of $7,000.

The board approved the purchase of new computers and infrastructure earlier this year and Deon said the firewall should be the last of the more expensive computer and technology equipment in need of replacement or upgrade. The money for the firewall had been included in the budget for the current year, according to Deon.

In other business, the board heard a request for the legal transfer of an eighth grade students to Blevins. Deon began reading the request aloud but stopped, saying that the information became too deep for public knowledge. Citing social adjustment and transportation issues, the board unanimously approved the request after individually reading the letter.

Cornelius was recognized for his years of service to the board. Clark Crellin - Cornelius replacement - attended the meeting and will begin official duties as a board member at the Oct. 16 meeting.

Following the meeting, Cornelius said that he had greatly enjoyed his five years on the board. Cornelius said he believes the district is headed in the right direction.

I feel good about being a part of that for the past five years, he said.
