Nevada reports 2007 is off to a good startBy Wendy LedbetterPublished Wednesday, September 12, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune The 2007 school year is off to an excellent start at Nevada Schools, according to Superintendent Rick McAfee. McAfee said the district lost about 30 students, but said it gained back about that same number, making it a wash. He attributes much of that gain to students moving into the district to live with surrogate families. The loss, according to McAfee, is simple economics. The price of gas and the lack of local job opportunities means people are looking for housing closer to their jobs. According to McAfee, there have been no discipline issues as of the second week of school. He said it seemed almost as if the students had missed each other and were anxious to be back to a school schedule. Its refreshing, seeing them all come back, he said. The district has a full slate of teachers, including new music, band, science and foreign language teachers. That means the district has no distance learning classes this year but is able to offer the classes their students need. We have several new teachers which brings in a new enthusiasm, I think, he said. Theyre doing a good job. McAfee said students have access to a new computerized math program that will help students reach their full potentials. If it works like I think it will, well see a marked improvement in math test scores, he said. With that program, students can do practice work at home and teachers can track the amount of time a student spends on the work. We have to take advantage of the technology thats offered, McAfee said, adding that Nevada is one of only two schools in the state currently offering the program. McAfee said the district has also met all requirements and is not among those on the school improvement list. Nevada has been in operation 20 years. McAfee said there has been no millage increase during that time. Im proud of that fact, he said. He said the building will soon need some work - such as heating and air conditioning units - but that the district is in good financial district overall.
