Junior Devils fall in season openerBy Jeremy LangleyPublished Wednesday, September 5, 2007 in the Gurdon Times The Gurdon Junior Go-Devils began the 2007 season with a devastating loss to the Glen Rose Junior Beavers on Thursday, Aug. 30. The game ended with the Junior Beavers topping the Junior Devils 20-8 at Go-Devil Stadium. Glen Rose took an early lead in the ballgame with a touchdown with just more than two minutes off of the clock. A flag on the play lead to some home that the touchdown would be called back, but the flag was waved off. The Junior Beavers made an attempt for a two-point conversion and were successful, but the two points were called back with a holding call and 10-yard penalty assessed to the visiting team. The two point conversion attempt was repeated. This time, the Junior Beavers were not successful. The score remained 6-0 in their favor. The first quarter ended with little other excitement and no other points being scored. Glen Rose made another quick score in the second quarter. A nearly 30 pass landed the Junior Beavers on the Junior Devils five yard line. With less than a minute and a half off of the clock, the Junior Beavers had their second touchdown of the game. Glen Rose coaches called a time out before attempting another two point conversion, but the attempt was again no good. The Junior Beavers lead 12-0. The Junior Go-Devils began to make good headway later in the quarter, but after a substantial yardage gain, a fumble caused the Junior Devils to lose 10 yards and placed them in a third down and 12 situation. The Junior Devils ended up turning the ball over on down. Glen Rose ran into the same luck on the next drive and turned the ball over on down with 1:22 left in the first half of play. The Go-Devils gained several yards with a pass completed to ninth grader Jared Shaver. A 15 yard facemask penalty against Glen Rose gave the Junior Devils a first down. With the clock winding down towards halftime, the Junior Devils gained a few yards on the next play and quickly called a time out to stop the clock with 24 seconds remaining. The Junior Devils sidelines were tense momentarily as a pass was intercepted on a second down attempt. A flag on the play caused the ball to be given back to the Junior Devils. The Junior Devils fumbled the ball on third down, and Glen Rose recovered it leading to the end of the half. The Junior Beavers got their biggest lead of the night after what was their quickest score of the night only 30 seconds into the third quarter. A successful two point conversion brought the score to 20-0 in favor of the visitors. A fumble during the next drive lead to the Go-Devils losing the ball to the Junior Beavers. Gurdon recovered the ball a few plays later when it was fumbled by Glen Rose. After gaining a few yards on the next play and a five yard penalty against the Junior Beavers, the Junior Devils were only four yards from their next first down. The Junior Devils came even closer as a facemask penalty against Glen Rose brought the Junior Devils into a first down and goal situation. With only a few minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Junior Devils put their fist points of the game on the board with a touchdown pass to Micah Henderson. A successful two point conversion pass to Keon Holliman brought the score to 20-8. The third quarter ended after another five yard penalty was assessed to Glen Rose. The Junior Beavers opened the final quarter with a holding call. The Junior Devils ended the game on a good run that wound up not ending in their favor. After a punt from Glen Rose, Holliman got the ball to the 15 yard line. A four yard gain on the next play and no gain on the next brought the Junior Devils to a third down and six situation. On third down, five more yards were gained. Henderson made tracks on fourth down and gained eight yards, earning the Junior Devils another first down. Glen Rose took a time out, and the Junior Devils gained another nine yards on the next play. The first down was gained on the next play. With 2:12 seconds remaining in the game, the Junior Devils were on fourth down with only inches to go for a first down. After the snap, the ball was handed off to Henderson who seemed to advance the ball somewhat. Official measurements were taken, but the first down was not reached. The ball was handed over on down. The game ended with the Junior Beavers defeating the Junior Devils 20-8. Weve got to play hard, Head Coach Hank Lewis told the team after the game. I saw some good effort out there, but we need to work on some things. In a post-game interview, Lewis said both offense and defense need to be adjusted. He said the teams defensive ends have also got a good bit to learn. The team will not play next week as it has an open date on its schedule.
