The biggest event of the year for Gurdon is just around the corner.

Billy Wells, coordinator of the Gurdon Forest Festival, said plans are already being made to ensure the 27th annual festival is a success. The festival is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27.

Im already receiving calls about the pageant, Wells said on Thursday, Aug. 30. He will co-chair that event with Elaine Halliday.

The pageant, now in its 18th year, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Gurdon High School cafetorium. The deadline to enter the pageant is Wednesday, Oct. 3.

Wells said about 35 contestants traditionally enter the pageant. Entries are not limited to girls from Gurdon girls ages 4-18 from anywhere in Clark County may participate.

The girls will be broken up into five age groups: Tiny Miss, Little Miss, Junior Miss, Princess and Queen.

Entry forms may be picked up at Billys Main Street Florist, located inside Kuhns Hardware. There is a $35 entry fee for each contestant.

Admission price to the pageant is $5. All tickets must be purchased the before the night of the pageant and are available at the florist.

The pageant will be judged by three judges brought in from out of town, Wells said. The winners will appear in cars during the Forest Festival parade. The parade has tentatively been scheduled for 9 a.m. the day of the festival in downtown Gurdon.

The pageant is not the only thing being planned this early out. Wells said anyone wishing to sponsor a booth at the festival may pick up a form at the florist. Booths may be set up on the morning of the event; a limited number may be set up the night before. Electricity is available for vendors.

The Gurdon Rotary Club is also making plans for its annual pancake breakfast that is generally seen as the kick-off of the festival each year. The breakfast takes place at the Gurdon Senior Adult Center.

The Gurdon Forest Festival is sponsored by the Gurdon Community Development and Entertainment club.
