Curley Cubs drop season opener to BobkittensBy Scoops AllsportsPublished Wednesday, September 5, 2007 in the Nevada County Picayune In the night-cap game, the Prescott Freshmen and 8th grade squads combined to make the Junior High Curley team. Even so, the Prescott squad was outnumbered by the swelling visitors sideline as Hopes junior high took the field. Prescott received the opening kick-off and started their drive from their own 10 yard line. Prescott freshman Keadrea Balance carried twice for three yards, when on 3rd and 7, quarterback Skyler Tippit connected with fullback Tevan Young on a play-action bootleg pass in the flats for an eighty-six yard touchdown scramble. Young received some key blocks form downfield receivers and turned on the jets to out-sprint the defenders to the goal line. The two-point attempt was no good, and Prescott held a 6-0 lead with 6:02 in the first quarter. Hope fumbled the kick-off, and Prescott recovered on the 44 yard line. Eight plays later, Tippits pass to tight-end Dillon Maxwell was intercepted to end the drive. Hopes first play from scrimmage netted a seventy-eight yard touchdown run, and the extra-point kick was good for a 7-6 lead with 1:42 left in the first quarter. Prescott s next drive stalled after three plays and Donald Hopkins punted the ball away for the Cubs. Hope took over on their 26 yard line, and three plays later punched it in for a score. The extra-point attempt was marred by a 15 yard penalty, as the next attempt was no good. Hope took a 13-6 lead with 7:55 to play in the half. Prescott took over on the 20 yard line after a booming kick from Hope for a touchback. The drive stalled after Balance got the first on consecutive runs of five and ten yards. Prescott s costly fumble gave hope the ball back on the 25, and one play later they scored yet again. The extra-point attempt was no good, and Hope led 19-6 with 6:07 left in the half. Prescott received the kick-off and took possession on the 30. Balance took over and on seven consecutive calls, Prescott had moved into Hope territory. On second down, Tippits pass to Young was incomplete to end the half with Hope leading 19-6. Hope took the opening kick-off and started three play drive from their own 46. The scoring drive was highlighted by a 50 yard scramble on third and long for the touchdown. The extra-point attempt was no good, and Hope led Prescott 25-6 with 6:49 to go in the third quarter. Prescott had to punt away to Hope on their next possession, but the Prescott defense forced Hope to turn the ball over on downs. Prescott took possession on their 30, and started a seven play drive that ended when a throwback pass from Balance to Tippit was intercepted. Hope got the ball on their 29 and put together a time consuming drive to score again for a 33-6 lead with time running out. Prescott was not finished though as they did mount scoring drive late in the fourth quarter capped by a Tippit to Maxwell completion for a 30 yard touchdown scramble. Prescott dropped the season opener to Hope 33-12, and will travel to Nashville this Thursday to face the Nashville Jr. High Scrappers on the Hill.
