Residents of the Greenville community are continuing their efforts to become a part of the City of Gurdon.

Greenville resident Shirley Todd-Floyd addressed the Gurdon City Council during its meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 21, and began the discussion by asking why city officials had not taken any further action on the matter. She also asked why the issue was not on the councils agenda and asked why Gurdon Mayor Clayton Franklins personal feelings were about the matter.

Ive not done anything concrete, Franklin told Floyd.

Franklin said the issue of annexation would require several things to happen including a special election in which the residents of Gurdon would have to vote to accept the Greenville community into the city. He also said it did not seem financially feasible to annex the community into the city.

If the community were annexed, Franklin said police and fire service would have to be extended to the area, and all of the roads between the city and Greenville would have to become city streets thus the city would have to pay for their upkeep.

Apparently we have enough to offer for our tax dollars to support other city limits, Floyd said in response to Franklins comments.

Floyd reiterated that the communitys main desire is to have sewer service extended to the area.

Franklin continued his comments stating that it would cost the city $3,000-4,000 to hold a special election to decide the issue. The money is not available in the citys budget. He said there are a lot of other questions to be answered.

Im not sure what the city would inherit as far as responsibilities, he said. Theres a lot we need to think about.

Floyd said she did not intend to allow the debate to end until the community became a part of the city.

I dont intend to stop, she said. Nothing but death can keep me from it.
