Patrons of the Prescott School District will be asked to approve a measure to issue new bonds in order to raise money for the school. Prescott Superintendent Hyacinth Deon said its important for voters to know that the millage will remain the same.

The Prescott School Board voted earlier this summer to refinance the districts existing bonds in order to raise money for school improvements and repair to existing facilities. The measure requires voter approval.

The ballot indicates that the district has 25 mills set aside for general maintenance and operation, as required by law. The remaining 10.1 mills currently being collected have been set aside for bond indebtedness. If the voters approve the measure, the mills will remain at 10.1 and the district will pay off the existing bonds and issue new bonds for a greater amount over a longer period of time.

Voters will be asked to vote for tax or against tax.

The school election is set by law on Sept. 18. Typically, if there are no contested seats for school board and no millage increases included on the ballot, the formal election may be waived by the districts in order to save the cost of a full-scale election. In this case, Nevada County Clerk Julie Oliver said she doesnt yet know whether the election will be waived. The Prescott School Board was slated to meet Aug. 14, but Deon was not available at press time for comment.

Early and absentee voting can be accomplished at the courthouse through Sept. 17.

The school board will soon have a new face. Board member Tom Cornelius is not seeking reelection. Clark Crellin is running unopposed for that seat.

In Nevada County, Jerry Bishop is a write-in candidate for the Zone 1 seat. Bishop is also unopposed for that seat.
