The Gurdon Council on Aging will be able to complete some of its goals with a generous donation from Senator Percy Malone and County Judge Ron Daniell.

The two presented a check to the council just before lunch at the Gurdon Senior Activity Center on Wednesday, Aug. 1. Malone said the money was from state general improvement funds he secured for the county to use towards local projects. Daniell had the ultimate decision as to where the money was to be spent.

Gurdon Senior Center President Doug Quillan said the council hopes to use the money to replace carpet in the centers office. He jokingly said that the carpet was so old it must have come over on the Mayflower.

The center also needs a new television as the one they have now does not work, Quillan said. The sound system in the building also needs to be upgraded. The council hopes to address all of these needs with the money from the grant.

Malone told those in attendance that the group could make a wish list of things they would like to have funded, and he and Daniell would work together in an effort to secure any funding they can.

You can always bring one of these when you come, Quillan said of the check. But you dont have to bring one to come.

The Gurdon Council on Aging works in conjunction with the Gurdon Senior Activity Center which is operated by the Central Arkansas Development Council. The council holds several fund raisers throughout the year including the annual Valentines Day king and queen contest. With the contest, the couple that raises the most funds are named the Valentines king and queen.

The council also holds various activities throughout the year to provide entertainment for the community. The most recent event was a gospel music concert.

The Gurdon Senior Activity Center serves a hot meal each day at 11 a.m. and provides pick-up and delivery services for those who qualify. For more information, call Royce Ann Barbaree at 353-2095.
